First, in a few words, here’s what programs for parenting are (also called methods or guides) : A mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, counsellor or therapist, creates a parenting method that works with his or her own children. This person decides to share his or her own method with other parents and the results are unanimous, the method works great ! This person decides to write his or her method down and sell it online as an eBook. Also, sometimes, a therapist decides to make an eBook out of the conferences he or she gives to share it with all the parents that can’t benefit from his or her knowledge by going to the conferences.

What do programs for parenting provide ? The form can differ from one program to the other, (sometimes there is an audio version) but they always provide 3 major things :

• Structure / guideline
• Communication tools
• Support

Those are the 3 pillars of a good parenting method, and I mean an effective one ! Advices sometimes are not enough because the basis isn’t there or because your child has very strong bad habits and/or is being disrespectful for too long. The communication tools are key because one word, the right sentence, the right question, the right tone shapes your child’s behavior. Programs for parenting literally tell you what to say and what not to say, they teach you how to master communication with your child.

About support, I can say this is the extra thing that makes a parenting method worth it. It’s important to feel supported and to be able to ask questions, get accurate answers when needed. Support by email or phone is what good parenting methods provide. I think it’s also a good thing if you’re a single mother or a single father parenting your child or if you are not supported by your spouse.

About where to find good programs for parenting, I’d like to do a bit of self promotion if you don’t mind !
